Employee evaluation is very important for all companies. Most companies spend large amounts of their money and effort to objectively evaluate employees for job improvements, and find their way to create employee development plans.

However, one of the most overlooked topics on employee evaluation is how to evaluate managers. This is because employees often do not have the opportunity and the courage to voice their opinions on their managers.

Regardless of the environment, managers must listen to other opinions, especially those from their colleagues. As a matter of fact, studies show that managers who regularly receive feedbacks are 8.9% more productive than those that do not.

A company’s growth depends on the efficiency of its managers. When managers are reluctant to receive feedback from their employees, it can lead to increase in turnover within the organization, which damages employee relationships, and leads to delay in projects. On the other hand, organizations with managers receiving regular feedbacks showed 14.9% reduction in turnover rate on average with 68% increased work satisfaction level among all employees.

Understanding the importance of employee feedback does not happen overnight. Managers must be trained to accept regular feedbacks. Receiving feedbacks from the people they work with can be challenging, but it is necessary for company’s growth.

There are many ways to gather employee feedbacks, but the most common way is to conduct surveys within the team. To receive high quality feedbacks, the questions for the survey needs to be well designed to ask the right questions. It is also helpful to make the survey anonymous for employees to freely express their opinions. The goal is to have the feedback be as candid as possible.

After gathering employee feedbacks, managers need to develop an action plan accordingly. Grouping similar answers together can lead to an understanding of what needs to be changed in the operations. Sharing the result or the action plan can also help boost team’s morale. Such action can show that managers are willing to accept the feedbacks from employees and improve.
